Protein Balls - The Yummy Treat and Delicious Snack!

Protein Balls - The Yummy Treat and Delicious Snack!

Bliss balls are a popular way to include high protein foods and protein powders into your day. They are called bliss balls as they always feel like you are having a little treat. This recipe is one of our favourite's at Alkaline Superfoods and is a great base recipe that can easily be adapted to include your favourite flavours of protein, nuts, seeds and dried fruits.

The fudgy, smooth, chocolatey flavour feels like you are eating dessert every time and can be a great mid morning or mid afternoon snack. Having a batch or 2 ready to go in the fridge or freezer means you will always have a healthy treat on the go.

The best part about these little bliss balls is they are completely guilt free, Vegan, Gluten free, a great source of protein, fiber and healthy fats.

If you want to keep them sugar free, just omit the maple syrup as there will be some sweetness from the Alkaline Vegan protein powder, which contains the natural plant derived sweetener stevia and pure vanilla extract.

Did you know.....

Just 100gm of raw almonds can provide you with up to 67% of you recommended daily intake (RDI) of magnesium alone. Magnesium is a vital mineral responsible for energy production, regulating bowel function, blood sugar stabilisation, healthy weight management and cardiovascular health. Not only will almonds keep you satisfied, they also keep sugar cravings at bay. If you find yourself with energy slumps throughout the day and need a pick me up, these will help to maintain your blood sugar, provide you with sustained energy and help you stay focussed, when it comes to making positive choices with your food and nutrition.

Almonds are also a great source of calcium, manganese, iron, vitamin E, vitamin B6, fiber, protein and mono unsaturated fats. They are very versatile as they can be activated/sprouted overnight in water and eaten as a nutritional snack, as a topping for soups and salads or blended with Alkaline water to make creamy almond milk. The soaking will increase their digestibility by removing the enzyme inhibitors in the skin which can cause sensitivity and discomfort in some people.

Almonds are a great addition to a healthy and balanced Alkaline diet and are one of our top choices in healthy alkaline foods.

Ingredients:

1 cup raw organic almonds

2 scoops Alkaline Vegan Protein in Vanilla

1/4 cup raw cacao powder

1/2 cup coconut cream

2tbs maple syrup (optional)

2tbs melted coconut butter or creamed coconut

1/2 cup coconut flakes

2-3 drops of your favourite essential oil (peppermint/orange/cinnamon)

Pinch of celtic salt

Extra raw cacao or protein powder for rolling balls in

Makes 20-22 Golf size balls

Method:

  1. Melt your coconut butter and set aside.
  2. In a food processor or blender, pulse the almonds on high until almond meal is made. This will only take a few seconds in a Vitamix or powerful blender. Don't over blend, as you will make nut butter. The heat from the blades will warm the nuts and release the oils.
  3. Add, the cacao, Alkaline Vegan Vanilla protein powder and salt to the almond meal. Pulse quickly until combined.
  4. In a bowl, place, coconut cream, maple syrup and melted coconut butter. Stir until well combined, then add to the almond mixture in the blender. Once again, pulse until the mixture is well combined and resembling a fudgy dough. You may have to scrape down the sides of your blender occasionally between pulsing.
  5. Add the coconut flakes and pulse again until blended through.
  6. To form bliss balls, take a tablespoon of mixture and roll into balls. Do this with all the mixture, then toss each bliss ball into some finely dessicated coconut, raw cacao or protein powder. Line them in a tray and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

Bliss balls can be kept in the fridge for 7 days or frozen for 1 month.
